Our main webservers run Lighttpd. It's lean and efficient, serving pages much faster than Apache, leaving more server resources for our customers, and less for overhead.
We're working on implementing a single-signon architecture around PTH Heimdal/Kerberos V, and we're already ready for internet-scale authentication infrastructure. Each user gets a password, not a separate account for every role they fill. This makes our systems even easier for a webmaster to manage, especially with more than a few sites.
We use three main servers, in a replicated cluster configuration. With a site designed for multiple frontend servers, we can load-balance among our servers — even add dedicated servers for your projects — all relatively transparently.
